Zero Waste Centre

Sharing ecological knowledge & environmental training for local businesses and people to apply in daily lives in order to improve local environments.

Empowerment: we share knowledge to empower each other, to make people believe that their actions can contribute something to the environment.

Development & Growth: we are aiming for the best results, but at the same time value the process. The development and growth of our works are the crucial part we can learn from.

Professionalism: we deliver a high standard of work to the local community, our clients, and partners. And offer transparency.

Environmental Protection: above all, we work together to protect the environment. We are part of it, so we carry responsibility to improve it.

The biggest part of solid waste is organic, which produces harmful methane gas. When waste is properly separated, the pollution of the environment is minimized. The purpose of the ZeroWaste Training is to educate people how to safely separate waste, and how to make it more valuable by recycling and upcycling. The ZeroWaste Training modules cover everything from climate change, health and safety, waste streams, to permaculture. The training takes 4 weeks and successful completion is rewarded with a Graduation Certificate.

“Through the training now I know that it is important to separate the waste so that we can add value to it.” Kadek Suteni (local community member)

“By doing the ZeroWaste Training for our staff, we prove that environmental consciousness is not the thing we just put in our promotion; we also have it in our workspace.” Dwi (BALI SWIM)

Options for participating:

Kids environmental classroom & ZeroWaste Goes to School

The future of a healthy environment depends on the next generation. That is why the Kids Environmental Classroom & ZeroWaste Goes to School helps children develop a longer-term thinking to become more aware of their environmental impact in their communities. Our goal is to encourage the students in becoming environmentally responsible members of society through learning by playing. The Kids Environmental Classroom program targets children aged 9-15 years from public schools and humanitarian organizations. They learn to apply environmental principles in their community by examining local problems and finding solutions.

The ZeroWaste Goes to School program offers a workshow about basic waste management, composting and climate action, ringing environmental education to hundred schools children every week.

Zero Waste Soap

Every year, 75 tons of used soap is thrown away by hotels and villas in Bali. The ZeroWaste Soap program collects, sanitizes, and reprocesses the used soaps from 18 hotels and resorts. Local women are trained and employed to upcycle the soaps.

The upcycled soaps are distributed to orphanages, elderly people and other disadvantaged people.

Beach Cleanups

Around 80% of all waste in the ocean comes from land and thus, from us consumers. Currently, Indonesia is number 2 in the list of most marine polluting countries in the world. Every year Indonesia produces 6.8 tons of plastic waste, of which 61% is not collected and disposed of safely, of which 40% ends up in the ocean.

R.O.L.E. Foundation organizes monthly beach cleanups in the south area of Bali. After cleaning the beaches, the collected waste is weighted and brought to the ZeroWaste Center, where it’s cleaned and separated according to the type of plastic and whether it can be recycled or not. The aim is to take as little as possible to the landfill.

Through beach cleanups we create awareness about alternative ways of dealing with waste, so that the environment can be improved. This knowledge is shared with local communities to increase impact.

There is an Indonesian saying, “Tak kenal maka tak sayang” which means “you do not love what you do not know.” Coral restoration is the extension of the R.O.L.E. Foundation’s current Environmental Program. In 2024 R.O.L.E. aims not only to stop waste going into the ocean but also to restore and maintain the coral reef in the Nusa Dua area. The R.O.L.E. Foundation aims to outplant 40 reef stars with approximately 600 corals through this pilot project. Individual and company can participate in maintaining one of Bali most crucial coral reef garden by adopting one coral

Zero Waste Tours

The ZeroWaste Center offers guided tours and workshops for companies (MICE), international schools and tourists. The revenue of sharing environmental knowledge to these target groups helps making the ZeroWaste Center financially sustainable. The tour leads through 10 eco-stations, explaining about waste separation, different types of plastic, composting, paper- glass- and plastic recycling, permaculture, deforestation, and much more.
